Candida is a particular type of yeast that’s responsible for yeast infections in both men and women. It can normally be found in the mouth, intestines and on the skin even in the healthiest of people. A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, most commonly in the genitals, although any warm, moist place can be at risk of a Candida infection.
The most common type of Candida, known as Candida Albicans, is normally controlled by beneficial bacteria that live in and around the body. When the levels of these good bacteria drop, yeast is allowed to takeover. This is especially true for those suffering from a compromised immune system. Beneficial bacteria play a role in the immune system, which makes an imbalance of these bacteria detrimental to your health.
A yeast infection caused by Candida can happen anywhere in the body that Candida is present. The most common points of infection are where Candida already likes to hang out like the mouth, skin and genitals. A little known fact is that men are susceptible to yeast infections just like women are. Although more rare, men can also suffer from a yeast infection of the penis or genitals. This type of infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida can be extremely painful.
Usually only a small number of the Candida are living in your body at any given time. Other bacteria are in direct competition with the Candida for resources, which mostly keeps Candida in check. A Candida outbreak occurs, causing a yeast infection, whenever these levels become imbalanced.
Although Candida is just a single cell organism, large colonies of Candida can cause big problems for people. Keeping Candida in check involves improving your immune system and keeping levels of beneficial bacteria high through the use of Probiotics. Some medications can also be taken to help your immune system fight Candida, although they generally don’t address the root problem causing Candida levels to rise in the first place.
